Aging out of crime
In the United States the our communities are plagued by the so-called lack of leaders and leadership in their communities, yet we see persons like give of themselves and lead healthy and prosperous lives within public service. Good persons can have public service careers that rival Teddy Roosevelt and Gandhi. Today Barack Obama a politician is more popular than film star Denzel Washington I can not remember a time when a politician was more popular that a pop star in recent history.
The rants that declare the lack of leadership resound within communities all over this country regardless of size. These claims are not true and they are simply incorrect, the leaders that reside in our communities are simply not positive roll models. I argue that the media –yes, media the same media that says it only reflects life is to blame; here I give you my prospect for your own review.
The media offers us entertainment that often uses murder as the centerpiece of the story. The most watched television shows are crime based. Combining the major networks ABC CBS FOX NBC and CW excluding cable tallies a total of 20 hours, there are approximately 105-primetime viewing hours per seven day period, other crime based shows equal 16 hours bringing total crime entertainment to a total of 36 hours that is down 2 hours from 2007 fall schedule. CBS leads the pack at 13 hours of crime 9 of which are murder based shows as of September 2008, surprisingly CW is the family friendly favorite with only two shows with a crime subplot.
Murder is not casual; it is not like it appears on TV. You have to be in one of the following states of mind to commit murder; scared/frightened, angry, socially and or morally bankrupt. I could have used a technical psychological phrase like sociopath but that makes it sound like a disease or something that is curable. It takes a special someone that could actually be so depraved to take a life and expect to continue to walk amongst us in society. Society itself demands the seeking of redemption and it requires forgiveness. Forgiveness and understanding are the first two steps of peace.
STATISTICALLY If you are American male between the ages of 10 years old up to 29 years of age and have an average public school education with no technical training or post study you are deemed a potential menace and 230 times more likely to commit a crime in times of dire need or stress than your alike counter parts of any other indicators.

The crimes that you are more likely to commit are Simple Assault of a person known to you a friend, family or social contact on most occasions, that person would have kindly rendered you assistance in times of need if asked.
You are more likely to commit an act of burglary (breaking into a friend's house or vehicle) for your own gain by possessing stolen goods. You are likely to be found behind the steering wheel of a car that no one has given you permission to drive. This is the short list of crimes that you would most likely attempt prior to "liking it”.
When confronted with your misdoings you will either turn to acts of violence, drug use, and larceny/theft including extortion or all three. At some point during this crime building career you will have undoubtedly been incarcerated giving you time to work on your masters degree of crime. A masters degree in crime will include advanced assault techniques with a sub major in the arts of extortion, intimidation and coercion if you are ambitious in completing the career criminal tract you will dabble in date rape and attempted murder all of these will be carried out by you beyond personal fear of accusation and prosecution.
Upon completing the masters program prior to your 30th birthday, you are unleashed back unto an unprepared world waiting for you to be reformed. From your perspective it appears waiting to be picked like an over ripened piece of fruit hanging low on the tree.
If you are successful in staying off the radar, this means keeping your nose clean while on parole you then feel free empowered to put your degree to use. For the rest of society this is a potential nightmare made true.
For the post masters graduate of crime you are 30 – 40 years old working in a sub standard job due to lack of employable skills, most employers today asks if you are a felon and most require a drug test of some kind. After meeting dead end after dead end you decide to go with what you know putting your master degree of crime to work. A cottage industry of sorts you bring in a few new recruits, allow them to join the apprenticeship program setting them on the path of being successful master graduates of crime.
As stated in the beginning, there are role models in the American communities they are just the ones you do not want to admit that exist. These days it is seems un cool to be a teacher, a poet, a musician or a scientist.
This is not written to plow under those struggling to get a hold of some redemption and peace in their lives it is written to start the dialog that is needed to stop the drain on the culture and life of Americans everywhere. We are a diverse people in a sad state of acceptance. Wanting to be rich. Wanting to be successful is one thing but once you get there what are you going to do for others? What are you going to do to make all Americans a better people, what will you do to stop others from failing?
Statistics are just the numbers that can be used to see what is possible. Instead of giving the statisticians the tools in numbers to create a case for less meaningful education in American communities based up on what could be. This can be seen as carelessness on the part of American leaders and parents alike.
In closing: I believe a case can be made for less punitive and unreasonable punishment for juveniles that have not been immersed in a life of crime. To accomplish this requires programs be instituted for true rehabilitation assistance in expediting (shortening) the age out process from a life of crime. To make that break from a life of crime intervention needs to be applied instead of waiting for the next occurrence of recidivism. The juvenile offenders need encouragement and have to want it. They need to know that there is something really out there for them other than crime. It needs to be stressed to them that it is simple: in order to get away from a life of crime you simply have to give up a life of crime.
For every ex con that has met indignation when stating that he would like to change, you need to know as a society when you he is asking for a second chance for the eighth time we are not really listening. Asking for a chance in some cases is not asking for a chance to succeed they are asking for a chance to make another mistake.
As a personal note to those out there that need assistance: Until you correct your thinking and your motivation for asking of a second chance, nothing will change and you will only succeed in making those that believe in you more cautious of your statements and actions. Break your cycle, we will support you. Increase your positive knowledge, we will support you.
